I have used many different soaps in the past.  I will admit it, I grew up on Dial! Then, I switched to shower gels and shower creams that were full of nasty chemicals (at that time I wasn’t paying attention to what was on my skin).  None of the products that I was using helped my dry skin and crocodile legs in the cold winter months. In 2012, I started using my father-in-law’s handmade olive oil soap and I loved it!  Finally, no more dry and itchy legs and I even use less body lotion.  That is when my love affair began with handmade soap.

IT is ALL about the ingredients.  Most handmade soaps are made with natural or organic ingredients using a variety of vegetable oils (i.e. olive oil, coconut oil, etc.) and essential oils (think: aromatherapy benefits without going to a spa!).  The natural ingredients allow for a gently cleanse that won’t strip away the natural oils on your skin. Commercial soaps often contain many synthetic ingredients and detergents, which can be irritating and drying to the skin. These ingredients can strip away the natural oils on your skin.

Glycerin is a by-product of the soap making process.  It helps to maintain the water balance on your skin and locks in the moisture to sooth and soften your skin.   Glycerin is beneficial to those with sensitive skin, children, and those with psoriasis.   Commercial soaps often take glycerin out of their soap!  Why? They use them in other products, such as lotions and hand creams, (more money for them, less for you!)

Handmade soap artisans often ‘superfat’ their soaps. This means that they formulate their soap recipes to plan to have a percentage of the oils that don’t turn into soap; thus extra moisturizing!  At Vilia Soap Company, we superfat our soaps at 7% to give extra moisturizing properties.  If superfatting just isn’t enough, we also add in a special nutrient oil when we make our soaps such as, sweet almond oil, avocado oil, extra virgin olive oil (in Greece we can never have too much olive oil). More moisturizing properties in the soap means you can spend less money on moisturizing creams.

Commercial soaps often melt faster than handmade soaps due to the high content of animal fat and lower density, hence, you keep buying more soap!

You can almost guarantee that handmade soap artisans do not support or conduct animal testing.  The only animals that use are soap (and love it!) are Rylee (a laid back poodle with sensitive skin) and Kiara (a tea cup yorkie).

Most commercial soaps contain animal fat to make their soaps, since it’s so cheap and plentiful.  Unfortunately, they don’t call it out on their ingredients as animal fat (its labelled sodium tallowate).  Our soaps at Vilia Soap Company are perfect for vegans because we do not use any animal products.

Our skin is the biggest organ of the human body and the organ with largest exposure to outside ailments.  We wouldn’t go out in a snow storm and strip off our clothes, so why would you use a soap that strips you of your natural moisture!  Lipids (found in olive oil) are natural fats that keep our outer layer skin moist and healthy and they can be destroyed by detergents and alcohol.

Olive oil has so many benefits to the skin! It is the perfect agent to soften and sooth the skin, it will not clog your pores, and it is rich in antioxidants. It is known to help relieve symptoms of eczema and psoriasis due to the anti-inflammatory properties.  Olive oil soap can also help with acne due to the anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.
