5 Benefits of Soy Wax Candles
Soy candles are made with natural soy wax (a vegetable oil derived from soy beans). The soy wax we use in our candles are made from US grown soy beans in the Midwest – yeah to American farmers! Most candles on the market are actually made with paraffin wax which is made from petroleum oil (sounds cozy right?!).
South Carolina State University conducted a study on soy candles and paraffin candles to determine their emissions. It was found that candles made with paraffin wax emitted toluene and benzene when burned. These are actually carcinogenic to humans (yikes!) and are the same toxins released from diesel fuel fumes. Soy based candles did not omit these toxins.
Soy wax burns slower and at lower temperature which makes them often last longer than paraffin. Studies have shown that the soy candle will burn 30-50% longer than the paraffin candles.
Paraffin wax typically create petrol-carbon soot in the candles which then burns and gets onto your walls. In my experience I have not seen a soy wax candle create any soot. I found that soy wax and high quality fragrances do not trigger my asthma or allergies (like paraffin wax candles do).
Paraffin candles are made from a non-renewable source, petroleum. Soy wax is a sustainable source that is not taxing on the planet and is completely renewable. Soy Beans are naturally biodegradable, whereas petroleum is not.
Bonus Benefits for Vilia Soap Candles
- We use only phthalate-free fragrances to scent our candles. Phthalates are plasticizing chemicals that are toxic and some have even been banned in the EU. Phthalates are still considered safe by the FDA, although they have been known to cause birth defects in animal testing.

Soy Wax Candle Care
When lighting your candle for the first time (and every time after) – allow the candle to burn approximately 2 1/2-3 hours so the wax has melted all the way out to the diameter of the container. Once the wax reaches the glass, allow it to melt until 1/4” deep. This is called a melt pool. This is also where all of that fragrant aroma is released! Soy Wax has a “memory” and by burning correctly it avoids the candle from “tunneling” down the center of the container.
